SAFETY
Your safety and that of others.
The inherent dangers associated with watersports demand respect. While there may be rescue and lifeguard assistance at popular spots, these should only be relied on in emergencies as a last resort. When taking part in a watersport, ensure you have as much information and education as possible in order to avoid placing yourself in life-threatening situations.
The Basics
- Know how to swim. Even if you’re a good swimmer, wear a life jacket/PFD when you’re on the water.
- Never go out alone.
- Check weather and sea conditions before heading out.
- When learning, take lessons from experienced and qualified professional sources.
- Protect your head with a watersports helmet.
- Know the local rules.
- Be respectful of ALL sea life.
- Label your gear with contact info.
- Protect your skin.
- Be respectful to all water users and keep a safe distance to avoid incidents.
Foil Sports and Environments
The range of foil sport activities is diverse, which means that different safety concerns will arise depending on the activity. For example, the safety requirements and considerations for surf or SUP foiling will be different to someone intending to wake or tow foil behind a boat. The environment in which the sport is practiced will also have a bearing on what safety advice you should follow.
BEACH SPORTS SAFETY
Applicable to wing, surf, SUP, kite and pump foiling.
Assess the beach when you arrive. Note any swimmers and other water users, rocks, piers, or breakwaters.
- Wait an hour after eating before going in the water. Never drink alcohol before going out.
- If you’re going out alone, be sure to have someone keep watch from shore.
- Get out of the water if you begin to feel cold.
- Take notice of signs and flags, especially red and yellow flags that indicate swimming areas patrolled by lifeguards.
- A black and white chequered flag marks the designated area for boaters and surfers.
- If you see a red flag, do not enter the water.
- If you see someone in distress, contact the coast guard.
- If you get into trouble on the water, hold onto your equipment for extra flotation and visibility.
- Never foil further from the shore than you can comfortably swim.
BOAT SPORTS SAFETY
Applicable to foiling behind boats, jet skis and other powered watercraft.
- Always wear a life jacket, even if you think you’re a strong swimmer.
- Always check your equipment, including the boat and all safety and first aid equipment.
- Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
- Monitor the weather conditions and be prepared for whatever weather conditions you may encounter.
- Be sure you or another person with you is knowledgeable about the craft as well as your activity destination.
- Always carry a reliable means of communication with shore, such as a radio or phone.
