OUR STORY

The genesis of Armstrong Foils is a story of passion and enthusiasm rooted in the adventurous and inquisitive minds of Armie Armstrong and Rob Whittall.

By 2015, these two had a long relationship with engaging adventure sports: Armie with sailing (a couple circumnavigations to his name), whitewater kayaking, kitesurfing, SUP racing, and Rob with whitewater kayaking, waterskiing, kitesurfing, and paragliding. Both Armie and Rob have always pursued that special feeling of freedom and self-expression on the water, not only for themselves but also helping the broader community of riders discover it too.

In 2015, foiling was mainly oriented around kite racing and the multidisciplinary sport we know today had not yet been created. Back then, as Armie went hard pushing the potential of foiling, so too the available equipment was breaking nearly every session. Seeing the potential to alleviate this time spent in the repair shed by building their own gear, Rob and Armie went all in on Armstrong Foils.

Armie’s background as a sailor, composites expert, career engineer and fabricator made him ideally suited to take the lead and create something better. Putting pen to paper and looking to nautical design, the foundation of the A+ System was created. A Quad C-Beam carbon composite mast was designed so that the fuselage would pass through a tubular mast foot and lock into position with a hexagonal fit. The proprietary Titanium Core carbon fuselage was created to bring exceptional strength to this critical component. Then the proprietary hexagonal front foil connection and sleek, trimmable stabilizer connection in back completed the design. From day one, premium stainless steel and titanium hardware were a must, because corrosion deserved be relegated to the past. The goal of making something user friendly, versatile, durable, and most importantly, fun to ride finally became reality and the signature smooth, responsive “Armstrong Feel” became a reality. The A+ System’s core design has remained largely unchanged to this day, testimony to the enduring strength, quality, and versatility of the design.
