The Everydayers | Marilyn Knecht – Proof That Passion Never Ages

The Everydayers celebrate the riders who show up for the simple joy of being on the water. Marilyn Knecht, 76, is one of them, whose lifelong passion for movement keeps her riding every day.

The Everydayers is a celebration of the riders who show up day after day, not for trophies or spotlight but for the simple joy of being on the water. They are the familiar faces carving through the morning bumps, the quiet mentors sharing tips on the beach and the people who remind us what pure stoke really looks like. These are the community pillars, the ones who inspire without even trying, simply by living the lifestyle they love.

We want to shine a light on the local legends who keep the fire burning for all of us. If you know someone who is always out there chasing wind, swell or glide, someone whose passion lifts the whole crew, we would love to hear about them. Share their name with us and help us tell the stories that make our community so special.

Most people talk about growing older as if limits bound it. Marilyn Knecht does not think that way for a moment. She wakes up, looks toward the ocean and steps straight into another day on the water. For her, life is simple. Move, breathe, glide and enjoy every moment. At 76 years young, she is a shining example of what happens when passion becomes a way of living.

Marilyn’s story begins long before foiling entered her world. She remembers the moment everything changed. A windsurfer appeared on the Oregon coast. She had never seen a board like it before. When he came in from the water, she asked if she could try. He simply tied the board to a tree and told her to take it whenever she wanted. 45 years later, she still laughs at how it all started.

Windsurfing became her everyday life, but then wing foiling appeared. Her husband was intrigued right away. Marilyn hesitated at first, loyal to the sport she had loved for most of her life. Then COVID came, and the two of them finally gave winging a try. They learned on their own, right there on the water, and something shifted. Today, she rides almost exclusively on a foil, drawn to the quiet glide and meditative flow it offers.

She says foiling is the most zen sport she has ever tried.

No matter how stressed or anxious I feel, the moment I lifts onto the foil, everything clears.

She uses words like peaceful, calming and forgiving to describe her setup. Her current favourite is the HA580.

What brings her back to the water every day is simple love. Love for movement, love for the ocean and love for the routine that keeps her feeling alive. Living on the beach in Maui leaves her with no excuses. Good or bad conditions, she goes out. The water is her reset button and her daily reward.

If she has any advice to share, it is this.

Get off your phone, get outside, do something that makes you feel alive. Learn to foil. Do not let age be the reason you hold back.

You will be amazed by what you can achieve and how strong you really are. Life moves fast, and Marilyn believes it should be spent enjoying yourself and being kind to yourself.

She does not frame her story as exceptional. She simply keeps doing the thing she loves, day after day. Yet anyone who watches her glide across the water sees exactly what makes her remarkable. Marilyn shows that joy, curiosity and stoke do not fade with time. If anything, they grow stronger when you refuse to stop chasing them.
